UDHR
India gained independence in 1947, after decades of our freedom struggle bought to a head a
flurry of resistance at home and advocacy for freedom abroad. The United Nations was also born in
1945 after a remarkable series of global initiatives that began with the birth of the League of Nations
in 1920. The culmination of these developments was the adoption (in 1948) of one of the world’s
greatest living documents – the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
